Block the connection between enemy pieces to create tactical opportunities

Updated: 1/26/2024

Interference

Interference is a tactic where you place a piece between two enemy pieces, disrupting their coordination and creating tactical opportunities.

Types of Interference

Line Interference

Blocking a line (rank, file, or diagonal) between two pieces.

Defensive Interference

Disrupting the connection between a defender and what it defends.

Offensive Interference

Blocking an attacking piece's line to a target.

Common Patterns

  1. Blocking Defense: Interfere with a piece defending the king
  2. Blocking Escape: Cut off the king's escape route
  3. Blocking Communication: Separate coordinating pieces
  4. Forced Interference: Force the opponent to block their own pieces

Sacrificial Interference

Often involves sacrificing a piece to block a critical line:

  • Sacrifice to block a defender
  • Sacrifice to cut off the king
  • Sacrifice to disrupt piece coordination

Creating Interference

  • Identify connected enemy pieces
  • Find the critical line between them
  • Calculate if blocking wins material or delivers mate
  • Consider sacrifices if necessary

Defending Against Interference

  • Maintain piece coordination
  • Keep multiple defenders
  • Avoid linear piece placement
  • Calculate opponent's forcing moves

Practice Tips

  • Look for pieces on the same line
  • Practice identifying critical connections
  • Study interference puzzles
  • Calculate forcing sequences

Interference is a sophisticated tactic that can turn the tables in complex positions.
