Attack the base of a pawn chain or piece structure

Updated: 2/4/2024

Undermining

Undermining is a tactic where you attack the base or support of an enemy pawn chain or piece structure, causing it to collapse.

Key Concepts

Attacking the Base

Target the piece or pawn supporting a structure.

Structural Collapse

Removing the base causes the structure to fall apart.

Pawn Chains

Most commonly applied to pawn chains.

Types of Undermining

  1. Pawn Chain Undermining: Attack the base pawn
  2. Piece Support Undermining: Attack the supporting piece
  3. Defensive Undermining: Remove defensive support
  4. Positional Undermining: Weaken the position's foundation

Common Patterns

Base of Pawn Chain

Attack the rearmost pawn in a chain.

Supporting Piece

Attack the piece defending key squares or pieces.

Defensive Structure

Undermine the pieces holding the position together.

Creating Undermining Tactics

  • Identify pawn chains and their bases
  • Find supporting pieces
  • Calculate the consequences of removing support
  • Execute the undermining move

Pawn Chain Strategy

In positions with pawn chains:

  • Attack the base, not the head
  • Use pieces to pressure the base
  • Advance pawns to undermine
  • Create weaknesses in the chain

Defending Against Undermining

  • Protect the base of pawn chains
  • Provide multiple supports
  • Counter-attack before undermining succeeds
  • Restructure if necessary

Practice Tips

  • Study pawn chain structures
  • Identify base pawns
  • Practice undermining tactics
  • Understand pawn chain dynamics

Undermining is crucial for both tactical and strategic play.
